Hidden Japantown: A Vision for Fillmore Street. By Mengxian He and Chak Ying Wong.

In the Spring of 2021, the California College of Arts held an advanced urban studio class to re-envision the ground floor of the post 2020 city. The studio sought to explore strategies for reclaiming the urban commons in the post-pandemic city, and generated research that resulted in the new book Common Ground: Project for the Post-Retail City, Re-Making the Ground Floor. Join us for the book’s release with the authors, where we’ll host a conversation about the research, case studies and design proposals explored in the studio, interrogate the future of the ground floor and social infrastructure, and what actionable policies, practices and partnerships could work toward a new common ground.
