San Francisco

The problem with concrete buildings

Lunchtime Forum

Non-ductile concrete buildings are some of the most seismically vulnerable in San Francisco and are extremely costly to retrofit. The worst of these buildings have deficiencies similiar to those of the Cypress Freeway that collapsed in 1989's Loma Prieta Earthquake. What should be done about San Francisco’s stock concrete buildings? What is there to learn from cities like Christchurch, New Zealand? With structural engineers David Bonowitz and Dave McCormick and UC Berkeley architecture professor Mary Comerio. This event is generously supported by Degenkolb Engineering.
