The “Cities of Carquinez” are the group of older, diverse, fast-growing and fiscally struggling cities at the eastern edge of the Bay Area. Communities of color priced out of other cities and those seeking safety and opportunity unavailable in their longtime neighborhoods drove much of the area’s growth over the past three decades. Now these cities, once a place for many seeking the suburban dream, are ground zero for the foreclosure crisis. Join us in a discussion of diversity outside the region’s core, and the opportunity and challenges it presents for planning, politics and development. With Allen Fernandez-Smith, CEO of Urban Habitat, Iris Archuleta, co-founder of Emerald Consulting, Eric Pido of San Francisco State University and Jake Wegmann and Alex Schafran of UC Berkeley.
