Like many city centers, Downtown Oakland bears the scars and disruptions of urban freeways, a legacy of 20th-century transportation thinking. While long-term ideas for removing or transforming freeways are proceeding, a lot can be done right now to reconnect blighted urban fabric, reclaim dead space and mitigate noise and safety impacts.
