Though beautiful, the San Francisco Bay can be a treacherous waterway to navigate. With narrow deep-water channels and multiple islands, not to mention the imposing concrete and steel piers of both the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge, numerous impediments stand in the way of any ship entering the bay. Enter the Bar Pilots, a group of navigators that brave rough seas eleven miles west of the Golden Gate to board incoming vessels and safely guide the massive ships to their destinations. Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour of their facilities, and their boats, and learn how this group helps to keep the Bay Area’s shipping economy buoyant.
Once we're done at Pier 9 we'll head to a local bar for a drink and to talk more about the Infrastructure Observatory, SPUR and the Bar Pilots — the first drink is on us!
Co-presented by the Infrastructure Observatory.
