In 2002, Oakland residents voted overwhelmingly to support Measure DD, creating the Oakland Trust for Clean Water & Safe Parks and allocating nearly 200 million dollars to finance the acquisition, construction and restoration of public open space, including recreational facilities, creeks, Lake Merritt and the Oakland Estuary.
