Is Microtransit the Future of Public Transit?

Lunchtime Forum

Public transportation agencies are experimenting with on-demand, shared and dynamic models that augment traditional bus and rail transit. These services — referred to as microtransit — are enabled by technology similar to the mobile smartphone applications pioneered by companies like Uber and Lyft. A recent study explores the experiences of public microtransit transportation providers and reveals key lessons for the future operation of flexible-route, on-demand public transportation.
