For many years, most states have not required recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as CalFresh in California, to work. New policy changes affecting counties throughout the state, however, now compel able-bodied adults without dependents to demonstrate that they are either working or in job training in order to receive CalFresh benefits. Already in effect in San Francisco, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, these changes will have particularly strong impacts on many benefit recipients, especially youth and those who are experiencing, or at a high risk, for homelessness. Come learn about the history of these changes, what it means for low-income adults and service providers across the region, and how local organizations and agencies are mitigating the anticipated impacts.
