When the San Francisco Hunters Point Naval Shipyard closed in 1974, it left behind a toxic legacy of radioactive contamination in the soil and groundwater. San Francisco has plans to redevelop the land once it’s declared safe, bringing new homes and businesses to the area. But as sea levels rise, it could elevate groundwater and bring once-buried pollution to the surface. Join us to hear from the San Francisco Civil Grand Jury on its report “Buried Problems and a Buried Process.” Jury members will discuss what they found, their recommendations to the San Francisco government and how to better protect the health of Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood residents.
