Honorees

Black and white headshot of Walter HoodWalter Hood

Walter Hood is the Creative Director and Founder of Hood Design Studio in Oakland, California. Hood Design Studio is a cultural practice, working across art, fabrication, design, landscape, research and urbanism. Walter creates urban spaces that resonate with and enrich the lives of current residents while also honoring communal histories. He is also a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and lectures on professional and theoretical projects nationally and internationally. He is a recipient of the 2017 Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award, 2019 Knight Public Spaces Fellowship, 2019 MacArthur Fellowship, and 2019 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize. Walter was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2021.

Alastair MactaggartAlastair Mactaggart

Alastair Mactaggart built housing in the Bay Area for over 20 years during his tenure as Partner at Emerald Fund. He is Board Chair and Co-Founder of Californians for Consumer Privacy, the nation’s leading consumer privacy advocacy group. He believes that all Californians, and people worldwide, should have the fundamental right of data privacy and be able to control their own personal information. From 2016-2018 he created and led a ballot measure which resulted in the passage of the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), at the time the most extensive consumer privacy legislation ever passed in the United States. In 2019-2020, he wrote and qualified another ballot measure, and in Nov. 2020 almost 9.4 million Californians voted to pass the California Privacy Rights Act, which builds upon CCPA to give Californians the best privacy rights in the world.

Fei TsenV. Fei Tsen

As a civic leader and private entrepreneur with experience in the nonprofit, public and private spheres, Fei has more than 40 years of experience in building housing at all levels of affordability and in guiding large scale, mixed use developments that have transformed industrial and waterfront land. She is the President and CEO of Windflower Properties, a mission-driven, multi-family residential development company. She is currently the President of the Treasure Island Development Authority. Previously she has served as the Director of Real Estate for the Port of San Francisco, the Director of Redevelopment for the City of Emeryville, and Commissioner of the former San Francisco Redevelopment Agency. Her leadership and expertise were critical for the creation of new public places – Yerba Buena Gardens, Zeum/ Children’s Creativity Museum, and the San Francisco waterfront after the demolition of the Embarcadero Freeway. She has served on numerous Boards for arts, education and nonprofit community development organizations and is a past Board Chair of SPUR.

Becky MorganBecky Morgan

Becky Morgan has dedicated her professional and personal life to shaping the Bay area region-- from her distinguished history of civic engagement, regional activism and philanthropic foundation. She has held numerous elected positions including in the California Senate, 1984-93. During her tenure in the Senate she was integral in the effort to save CalTrain as a regional mode of transportation and carried legislation aiming to develop a regional approach to problem solving in the Bay Area. She continued initiatives for regional solutions as the President and CEO of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley (1993-1998).

As President of the Morgan Family Foundation, she has championed the foundation’s grant recipients work in the areas of youth development, education enhancement, environmental conservation, and stewardship of regions and organizations. She is the catalyst behind the California Stewardship Network, a consortium of corporate, public and civic members developing solutions to economic, environmental and equity challenges. Becky and her husband Jim Morgan are co-founders of the Northern Sierra Partnership, dedicated to conserving bio-diverse lands, water and resources in California. The Morgan Family Foundation was happy to provide seed money for the expansion of SPUR into San José.
