SPUR led a coalition of 59 individuals and organizations to call on the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to lead on an equitable transition to zero-emission appliances. The Air District has shown tremendous leadership in its efforts to update rules governing emissions from building appliances such as furnaces and water heaters that emit Nitrogen Oxide. Our coalition argues that to reach the goal of phasing out polluting furnaces and water heaters in the next 5-9 years, the Air District will need to lead a broad, multi-stakeholder effort with two working groups to ensure an equitable transition to zero-emission space and water heating. These working groups will need to identify goals and indicators of an equitable transition, and address the affordability challenges faced by low-income households, including renters, in adopting cleaner appliances.
